Ammonia Toxicity

The aggressive odor caused by ammonia is a significant feature. Because
great ease in dissolving in water, the ammonia ends up permeating the skin,
mucosa of the nostrils, throat and eyes. This causes a very strong irritation and by conditioned reflex the eyes close and it is difficult to breathe. In
higher concentrations there is a corrosive effect on the mucosa of the nostrils
provoking beyond the difficulty of breathing, chest pain, cough and dyspnea.
At very high concentrations, respiratory arrest may occur and pulmonary edema may occur even after exposure. But if soon after the symptoms
disappear (cough, chest pain) this indicates that there are no major risks.
Liquid ammonia or low temperature gas can cause strong burns in the
skin if there is no protection.
Also the aqua-ammonia solution can cause burns due to the high pH of the
solution, so after an ammonia purge in a tank with water, great care must be taken with the emptying of the same
