What is a positive displacement compressor?

A positive displacement compressor is one that increases and pressure is given by reducing the volume. In the centrifuges, the gas is accelerated by passing through the blades of a rotor and its velocity is converted into pressure. Examples of positive displacement compressors are: reciprocating, rotary, gears and vane.
