KYOTO PROTOCOL

• 1988: The first meeting between governors and scientists on climate change, held in Toronto, Canada.
• 1990: The first report based on international scientific collaboration was the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), where scientists warn that to stabilize rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) - the Reduction of 1990 emissions by 60%.
• 1992: More than 160 governments sign the Framework Convention on Climate Change in ECO-92. The aim was "to avoid dangerous interference with the climate system". This should be done quickly to protect food sources, ecosystems and social development. Also included was a target for industrialized countries to maintain their greenhouse gas emissions in 2000 at 1990 levels.
1997: In Kyoto, Japan, the Kyoto Protocol, a new component of the Convention, is signed for the first time and contains a binding agreement that commits countries to reduce their emissions.
In order to come into force, the Kyoto Protocol must be ratified by at least 55 governments accounting for 55% of the CO2 emissions produced by the industrialized countries.
