The purpose of an air conditioning system is to promote year-round maintenance of temperature and relative humidity within the design prerequisites, ensuring adequate air cleanliness and speed, as well as operating at a site-compatible noise level within the limits required for comfort.
According to the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards - ABNT - an air conditioning system is:
"... the process by which the temperature, humidity, movement and purity of the air in enclosed spaces, intended for the occupation of man, are simultaneously controlled."
