Safety heads on reciprocating compressors

In the safety heads, the discharge valve is usually mounted on a separate plate. This plate is fixed by strong springs that rest on the cylinder head. In case the liquid refrigerant or oil, which are not compressible, penetrates the cylinder, this plate rises, surpassing the pressure of the springs, avoiding serious damage to the compressor.
