PTC Relay

Meaning of PTC - Positive Thermal Coefficient

It is formed by a tablet of ceramic material. This material has the property of increasing electrical resistance when heated by the current passing through it. During engine starting, the PTC is cold, and with a low electrical resistance, it consequently drives current through the starter coil, causing the motor to rotate. This current will heat it up causing the resistance to increase and the current to decrease through the starting coil until it becomes virtually zero.
Its use is recommended for freezers and domestic refrigerators where the time between the operating cycles is sufficient for the PTC to cool and be ready for a new match.
