PTC Current and Relay Relays
Relays are electrical accessories that allow the starting and operation of a hermetic compressor. All of them use single-phase induction electric motors consisting of two sets of windings: the one of march and the one of departure (or auxiliary). At the initial moments of operation of a compressor it is necessary that the two windings of the motor are simultaneously energized to put in motion the mechanical assembly, responsible for compressing the refrigerant fluid. With the compressor already running, the torque supplied by the two windings is high and only the running coil operation is necessary to keep the pump performing compression. In this way, the relay interrupts the passage of electric current to the starting coil, leaving it inoperative. Two types of relays are most commonly used in refrigeration compressors: Current (or Amperometric) and PTC (Solid State).
